This video is from www.UpWorthy.com, a new site aimed to promote conscious, feel good, and influential videos. I thought it fitting to post this after the Proud Mama: Fruits of Labor post.
As women, we focus so much on how another woman's beauty makes us feel instead of how the media makes us feel. The true enemy in this is the media. One way to combat the negative effects the media's portrayal of women has on us is by reinforcing our OWN self esteem. By doing this, we disarm the negative effects. I also urge women who work in these fields to maintain some type of integrity and urge your male counterparts to abandon promoting false images for the sake of revenue.

I have to agree with you 100% on your post! The media does a great job of making women feel like they have to live by a certain standard and display the perfect image in order to be considered a "real woman".
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post. I will be sharing it with my daughter. She is 12 yrs old and looks 16. She has just started public school this year after being homeschooled and I am very proud that she has the confidence to love her "thick" Puerto Rican body. She has already told me of instances where she has told a boy that she is proud of her "mighty wings" when he told her she had big thighs. I have tried to tell her that no one on Tv or ads look like that in real life. It's all fake. It's sad that so many girls have mothers that believe in the falseness and are spreading the lie to their family. Thanks again for sharing such an important message.
ReplyDeleteI commend you. Having a daughter is tough thanks for instilling self esteem and confidence. Your daughter is lucky to have you in her life. Please come back soon.
DeleteWhen money is in the picture it skews even the best of intentions sometimes, it's sad to say. your message is a really good one to share.
ReplyDeleteYes. Money is the root of all evil but we must learn to live with it. By building our own self up is a good start
DeleteWe have been talking about this almost non-stop for the last month. We will finally have a local TEDx salon event on the topic of body image in 2014. The media's role will be a HUGE topic. You almost can't address one with out the other. Thank you for sharing this.
